Newborn Sessions at Home: The process and how I work

So, the very first thing we start with is choosing a date.
We can either plan around your due date and choose an estimated session date that stays flexible, or we can schedule the session after your baby arrives if needed.
Usually, the best time for a newborn session is within the first two weeks because babies tend to be sleepier and calmer during this time, which can make the session easier and a little faster. But as a mom who went through a difficult recovery after giving birth to my own son, I truly understand how hard postpartum recovery can be. That’s why I always ask moms not to pressure themselves and instead choose a date closer to the third week if that feels better for them.
But everything is individual. If your recovery feels easy and you feel ready during the first two weeks — that’s wonderful. But if you need more time — that’s wonderful too. Both options work beautifully. The most important thing is your comfort.
So we can either reserve an approximate date ahead of time, or you can simply message me once your baby is here and I’ll immediately send you the closest available dates.
Preparing for Your Session
I’ll send you a styling guide that includes a moodboard and links to outfit ideas on Amazon.
And please don’t worry if your home feels less than perfect right now. That is completely normal. Your life has changed, and your home is now filled with life and meaning.
Usually I photograph near windows, in the living room on the couch, on your bed in the bedroom, in the nursery if you have one, and sometimes outside in your backyard if you’d like.
So you can prepare one or several areas beforehand, or simply leave it all to me. I always help clean and prepare the area we’ll use because I know exactly what will and won’t be visible in photos. Honestly, I would much rather you rest or sleep instead of cleaning before I arrive, and I’ll help with everything once I’m there.
Ideally, if your baby is younger than two weeks, try to feed them around 30-40 minutes before the session. If your baby is older than two weeks, around 20 minutes before usually works best.

The Session Process
During the first few minutes, I usually like to look around together with you. You can show me areas that feel important or beautiful to you, and I can also share my thoughts so we can decide together where the session will happen.
I also love looking through outfit options you may already have and helping choose what photographs best. And I always love seeing inspiration boards if you have one. Maybe there are specific photos or moments you would love to recreate — I will absolutely try to create something inspired by them while still making everything feel natural and true to your family.
During the session, we can always pause anytime to rest, feed the baby, change diapers, or simply take a break.
I have a child myself, so please never worry about whether I’m patient or not. I’m very patient and understanding, and I never set a strict timer or charge extra because your baby needed more time.

Safety
Now I want to talk a little about my approach to newborn sessions.
One thing that’s very important to me during newborn sessions is your baby’s safety and comfort. I try not to touch babies at all during the session and usually keep a little distance, allowing baby to stay safely with parents, in a cozy basket setup, on the bed, or naturally wrapped and comfortable. Of course, if parents need my help and feel comfortable with it, I’m always there, but my approach is always very gentle, calm, and baby-led. I also always have a mask with me during sessions for extra safety and peace of mind.
I personally love keeping things simple and natural. Most of the time, a soft blanket or very light wrap is more than enough for baby to feel warm, calm, and cozy. Sometimes I’ll simply use a light swaddle or blanket to softly cover the diaper if baby is naked, and that already looks so beautiful and natural in photos.
For me, this approach is the most special because it allows us to capture all those tiny little details exactly as they are — little hands, fingers, tiny toes, soft stretches, sleepy cuddles.
Props & Additions
I bring a few natural baskets in different sizes, along with blankets and special pillows made for newborn sessions.
I wash all blankets the evening before every newborn session, and I also never schedule more than one newborn session per day so everything feels safe and calm for your family.
As a mom, this is deeply important to me. I would want exactly this kind of care and attention from my own photographer, so I try to be that person for you.

Unexpected Moments
Sometimes the first minutes of a session may not go as planned. For example, your baby may cry nonstop at first — and honestly, that’s completely understandable.
Even though I don’t wear perfume, your baby still feels that there is a new person in the house. Babies can become nervous and ask for warmth, feeding, and comfort simply because that’s how they feel safe.
Babies also feel everything you feel. If you’re nervous or overwhelmed at the beginning of the session, your baby can absolutely feel that too and become fussy. Try to hold your baby close, breathe deeply, and allow yourself to relax a little.
Your baby will settle or fall asleep eventually, and we will absolutely create beautiful photos together. Even if during the first minutes it feels impossible, please trust me — I’ve never had a newborn session that didn’t work out, even with very fussy or very hungry babies ;)

Final Notes
I never set a timer, but most newborn sessions usually last around 1.5-3 hours depending on your baby’s mood, feeding needs, and age.
We finish once we feel that we captured everything we wanted, or once we can see that your baby is tired and ready to rest.
Your final gallery will be delivered within 10-12 days.
Thank you so much for your trust. I truly hope this information helped you feel a little more prepared and comfortable.

We had the absolute best experience with Xenia as our newborn photographer! She came to our home, which made everything so comfortable and stress-free. She was so patient and gentle with our newborn, and it was clear she has a special talent for working with babies. She also captured beautiful family photos and even incorporated our dog seamlessly, which meant so much to us. The photos are truly priceless, and we’ll treasure them forever. We can’t recommend Xenia enough!
